What remains: The root system stays in the ground. Over time — typically 5 to 10 years — the roots decompose naturally.

What you get: A level surface that can be covered with topsoil and grass seed, or used for planting. The wood chips can be used as mulch or hauled away.

Full stump removal means extracting the entire stump and root ball from the ground. This is a much more intensive process, typically requiring an excavator or backhoe.
